Bring me the horizon – Post human nex gen
It took ages for this album to finally drop in part because of how the music industry works now. The need for relevance means drip feeding fans for months on end but it was worth it. I really enjoy every song on it and somehow it does seem to flow really well even though the songs vary in style and sound but if anyone can do it BMTH can. Its a fairly long album at just under an hour which usually for me is a bit much but due to the poppiness of it I actually don’t mind. Speaking of its poppiness I think it was a good way to go for them. They caught some flak with AMO but I also really enjoyed that album. They didn’t really sacrifice any metal either so its actually a really nice blend of metal and pop. Hell it might actually be more metal than pop but since I’m usually listening to heavier stuff this is a nice pallet cleanser of an album. 8/10
Better Lovers – highly irresponsible
At first I thought this album was ok but after repeated listening it really got stuck in my head. Looks like the experiment of not using spotify is paying off. I would have just passed on this before but with repeated listening it found its place in my daily listening. Its hella catchy with great riffs and vocal hooks. I saw them live and its just as good as well as being a chaotic show. I should mention that the band is made up of member of Every Time I Die and Dillenger Escap Plan so its not like these guys are new to making catchy noise. Its great blend of old school metalcore with some hardcore bits thrown in for action. Id say its another easy listening album for me to throw on when trying to relax. 8/10
Opeth – The last will and testement
Iv not fully engaged with this album yet but since I will be seeing them soon it will most likely get more playtime. The return of the growls from Akerfeld is most welcome because the guy is just so damn good at it. The album feels like early era Opeth which I never fully dug into wxcept for a couple albums. I actually got into them through their prog era which I still enjoy. So this album blends the prog and death elements and flows really well. I enjoy that its a concept album about a fathers final will so that provides a nice story to go with it. Im a fan of a good concept album and I think Opeth is more than capable of delivering the goods. In fact I might actually go and listen to this now since just thinking about the glorious riffs this album has, hankering for some proggy death metal. 7/10
The Jesus Lizard - Rack
I never listened to them growing up so I have no nostalgia glasses when it comes to this band. I got into them through a friend who has great taste in music and we align fairly closely in that sense(yes I think I have great taste in music). So as a fan of noise rock what can I say that hasn't been said by anyone about the jesus lizard before. This is noise rock at its finest. It's unhinged and quirky and fun and a welcome return. Also their live show is brilliant. They are as relentless live as they are on record. They did 2 encores! Madness! So if you are in any way into noise rock then strap in and put this album on. 8.5/10
I wasn't planning on doing a music review on here but I did want to track what I was listening to so I could do my own spotify wrapped thing. I was gonna go old school pen n paper with it but figured why not just do it here and maybe some other folks might see it and get into great tunes. Again im gonna stick to blowing my own horn here.
Iv eyed up a few more artists for next month which im excited to get into and a bit further down the line is roadburn festival which I hope will introduce me to some weird and wonderful stuff.
